I have had a life-long interest in the well-being of mothers, babies and families. I believe that a healthy pregnancy, a powerful birth experience and the initiation of bonding and early breastfeeding can all contribute to strong and loving family ties. As a midwife, I feel that my role is to be "with woman," as a guide and counselor through one of life's most dynamic passages. I have been a practicing midwife for over 30 years.
I began studying midwifery in the mid-seventies. My second child was home-born in 1975. I apprenticed to foreign-trained midwives in upstate New York and to Elizabeth Davis, author of Heart and Hands, in San Francisco, California before moving to Seattle in 1981. I attended the Seattle Midwifery School and graduated in 1986.
I have been a member of Midwives Alliance of North America for several years. In 2004, my gynecology co-instructor and I presented at the annual MANA conference in Portland. In 2005, I
was invited to present a birth art piece at the ICM, the International Conference of Midwives in Brisbane, Australia.
I have taught courses at SMS and Bastyr University for several years, and, in 1994, I received the Midwife of the Year Award from the Midwives Association of Washington State (MAWS), the Washington State organization of midwives. In November, 2002, I delivered my first grandchild, Milo, in his California home. My dream of a midwife for every mother is beginning to be realized.

As a young child, I knew that I would be delivering babies someday. I
always thought I would be an obstetrician, but when I found out about
midwifery as an undergrad, I knew that this is what I would be
when I grew up. I feel immense gratitude toward all the mothers, babies,
and midwives who have taught me so much.
As a native, subway-riding, fast-walking New Yorker, I moved to Seattle
with the intentions of finishing midwifery school in a blaze of glory
and moving back to the city. However, the coffee and beautiful mountains
and water had me hooked, and I was staying in Seattle.
I graduated from Seattle Midwifery School and
subsequently became licensed in the State of Washington. Prior to
midwifery, I graduated with a B.A. in Dance from Barnard College of
Columbia University. I became a doula and began supporting women
in NYC with their home, birth center, and hospital births. I
was certified as NYS Emergency Medical Technician and rode as a member
of the South Orangetown Ambulance Corps for two years prior to attending
midwifery school.
During my time at midwifery school, I attended over 100 births both in
the U.S. and overseas in the island nation of Vanuatu. I also taught
Infant Safety & CPR as well as Childbirth Education in the hospital and
at other sites in Seattle.
When not at a birth, I spend my time drinking coffee, running, salsa
dancing, watching Bollywood films, traveling the world, and knitting
with my cat, Pekoe.
Languages: Korean, Spanish, and some Bislama.
The following quote summarizes my philosophy around birth:
You are assisting at someone else's birth. Do good without show or
fuss. Facilitate what is happening rather than what you think ought to
be happening. When the baby is born, the mother will rightly say: "We
did it by ourselves".
